Today’s video goes into more detail about why I think the platform serve stance is the way to go to have a dominant tennis serve.
And by the way I am loving the feedback I am getting from everyone…
So far we have heard from tennis players, fans, and coaches from all over the world including Thailand, Finland, Germany, and Portugal. Thank you for all the support and all the great comments and questions.
I know tennis players are hungry to learn and get better everyday.
Enjoy the video on the tennis serve stance and leave me a comment below.
Talk soon.
Jeff
Hey there, Jeff Salzenstein here. And in today’s video, we’re going to talk about the serve as it relates to the stance.
Now, I’ve talked a little bit about this before. I want to go into a little bit more detail with the serve because I got an email from a tennis fan/player that wants to learn more about why the platform stance instead of the pinpoint stance. If you’re not clear on what those two stances are, the platform stance, the back foot does not move; the pinpoint stance, the back foot moves.
Now, I move my back foot until I was about 28 years old, I had a great serve, I had some great results with that serve, moving my back foot in college and the pros but I felt like something was missing. And I went to visit John Yandell and he explained to me why he felt Pete Sampras had the best serve of all time — career 62% server, he’s able to create more topspin, he’s able to have a bigger shoulder turn because of the platform stance.
So by moving your back foot back a little bit, it helps you to create that torque and that shoulder turn with that stance. If you move your back foot up, you kind of lose that turn, you lose a little bit disguise. So I recommend going with the platform stance because you can get more topspin, you control the toss a little bit more over your head, especially on the second serve.
And one other thing that I like to talk about is I like jumping off of 2 feet instead of off of 1. And when you bring your back foot up, you’re essentially jumping off of your front foot. Now again, there’s a lot of great servers that use the pinpoint stance, there’s also women servers that tend to gravitate towards that pinpoint stance, but I’m a big believer that the better servers in the long run are going to be serving from a platform stance and you can see that with Roddick and Federer and many others.
So hopefully you enjoyed this video and I’ll talk to you soon.
And oh by the way, go ahead and leave a comment, let me know what you think of this video and yeah, I’ll talk to you later. Thanks!
